Ethan points out :

The only problem with this is that it's as easy to go from Pistol-33
to Pistol-34 as it is to go from Pistol-1 to Pistol-2. Traveller's
lack of a skill level ceiling makes it difficult to judge which
of these two things should be harder.

One way is to say that skills should be harder to improve as the levels
get higher, as you need more and more knowledge/experience as you go up.
Electronics-6 could be an order of magnitude more knowledge/experience
than Electronics-5.
- ---

You have a darn good point there. I never really sat and thought about
that, but in real life the more you delve into a field, the more esoteric it
becomes. Stands to reason any good skill system should at least attempt to
mirror this.

Examine this for a second: The Enterprise just discovered practical
immortality! Age regeneration without *any* loss of memory or brain
function! I could endless go from 28 (when my cancer presented itself)
back to 14 or so, and live forever with a working immune system! But we
never hear about this marvelous discovery again.
- ---

I've mentioned this before, so I will again. <grin>. There is an even
greater miracle in their tech. What do you get when you combine replicator,
communicator, computer and transporter technology? The ability to recreate
someone who has died, with their computerized 'copy' constantly updated via
communicator. Therefore, death is meaningless in the long run. sure, its
unfortunate for the copy who dies, but just replicate via the transporter
another copy and presto. Stephen Goldin writes about such a thing in his
book, "The Eternity Brigade" which is a damn good read.

4 Lords of the Diamond series is great stuff. How much handwaving would you
need to do to run a classic traveller scenario based on that?

I promised Steve I'd name a nuclear-powered lander after him. Here, then,
is the Husdon-class Lander -- my attempt at a credible landing craft for
the Sword Worlds. Note the lack of weapons: I felt that after decelerating
with five 20 kton bombs per second, there wouldn't be much more for the
marines to do than occupy what was left of the target. :-)

IMTU crude grav seeking missiles were introduced one TL after air rafts.
They got better and more diverse as TLs increased, as did counter measures
against them. I used the jet engine/ heat seeking missile evolutionary
dichotomy as a model.

Subject: Four Lords of the Diamond (Re: Poul Anderson...Hal Clement)

Actually less than you'd think... and more.

The physics of the system fall well outside of the range that ANY
Traveller based design system could create, with three habitable worlds.

The main effect in the stories, the nanites that change the agent, can
be hand waved as some type of ancient artifact. Once beyond the fact
that they are well beyond the highest Trav tech level, their effects can
be gamed rather easily with Trav's rules. It's quite reasonable to have
the nanites tied to something on a world or worlds (possibly a central
processor... anyone see Crusade?) and have one of the effects be the
death of the host once away form the control of the CPU.

The fact that the lead character was a multiple clone with matched
memories is also beyond the scope of Traveller tech levels.

Best bet would be to modify the scenario to a single world, maybe with
three distict continents (all artificial and equal in size) that
"someone" is using as a prison after finding out that the nanite "virus"
kills anyone infected once a certain distance from the world (say just
under the jump limit) was reached.

Another possiblity is to have the nanites create massive jumpspace
intolerence in the recipiants. THat way they can move at sub-light
speeds but not jump. This would make the system less effective as a
jail, however.

Don't know about the above but I heard tell of a simular pintal mounted xbow
used from river partol craft in the delta in the Viet Nam War. It was
reportedly used to fire "torchs" into buildings.

I loved the book, but as I remember, you couldn't come out just anywhere.
There were specific points or areas one had to get to in order to Jump and
from which one exited from, although they were not limited by the same 100 d
limit of Trav. I asked about ideas on how the Alderson Drive might work in
the TU earlier, and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of First In (couple days
from now, I think.) to see how the steller data is handled.

Not if Ken is looking for 1 level per year. ;->

During character generation the number of levels gained per year varies from
system to system. So perhaps the experience system you use should vary from
system to system matching character generation.

Thanks for the comments!

I use the Intel version of Lightwave 5.6. Reading from the box cover, LW
5.6 requires a minimum of 32megs, a 486 w/FPU, 10megs hdd, cd, and a screen
resolution of 800x600. That said; BWAAHHAAAA HAAAA HAAAAAA HAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
Oh, I don't think so!! While I've run LW on as little as a P120 with 64megs
of RAM, I did not enjoy it :) Currently, I run it on a PII-266 or PII-350,
with a 128megs of RAM, depending on whether I'm at home or work. This is
starting to get a little long in the tooth for me. I'd like to get up to a
dual PII-550 with 256megs+, and a SERIOUS video card like an Oxygen 404 or
better :)

Best,
Jesse

When I arbitrate a game* I always maintain the right to throw an occasional
goody beyond the scope of the usually restrictive system I have customized.
And even if I start off canonical to a particular system, I always find
myself tweaking it till the Heresy Event Horizon is crossed. Usually in a
matter of months. By keeping the base experience system restrictive, I can
keep things from getting crazy when my local number cruncher has discovered
all the quirks in the system that can be exploited. I think that's more
enjoyable to him than even the playing, except when I arbitrated Amber. No
point in that type of mindset with that game. And I can subtly steer the
chr's skill progression. When the Goodies come out, they get a kick too, and
you can tie many into the storyline.

*I try to avoid this, as I want to play instead. But my group whines a lot
when neglected. ;)

most of which can't be Traveller subjects, so I've got my hands full this

"All good things come to those who wait" :)

I'd actually like to do something like your second suggestion for the
interior of "Starports" or for my own Blackmoore Heavy Industries site. The
idea has been floating about my head for some time :) I MAY do your first
suggestion for G:S if possible, but that may not happen due to time
restraints.

Thanks for the comments!!!

Best,
Jesse

As Loren is busier than I am, you may want to send suggestions / requests
directly to him at lkw@io.com. The more people that ask for stuff like this
(and I'm certainly one of them :) the more likely it is that they'll
consider doing it. It can't be very cheap to do full color prints of
starships onto t-shirts :)

Best,
Jesse
